How to Use a Soldering Iron Properly and Safely

A Soldering Iron is a simple heating device that serves multiple purposes especially for an electronic enthusiast. You may find them being used through metal works, arts, automotive repairs and etc… but the most common application are through the field of electrical related works. The following are the instructions on how to use a Soldering Iron in a proper and safety manner:

Holding the correct way

The Soldering iron must be held in a manner as if it’s a pen which is the same thing when you are going to write something on a piece of paper. If it is your first time handling this kind of equipment then you have to avoid touching the tip of the iron because it’s extremely hot and it could cause injury on your part.

Heat Application

You must have a stable grip and gently touch the tip of the iron on the surface area that you need to heat up. In some electronic application, a technician uses a Solder which composes of a tin and lead. These two properties when combined together are called flux. The application of solder is called tinning simply because of the composition of a tin from the flux. You may also find that there are various types of flux that are available such as the size and thickness.

Making a Connection

Heating up the solder will turn it into a liquid form for under a few seconds and this will allow you to make a joint connection. You will notice that the solder often takes a form of a half rounded shape and it should permanently connect the joint after it dries.

Types of Soldering Irons

There are several types of these devices where some are design specifically for crafting or metal works. One main differences are the wattage where the lower watts are best used for crafting purposes while the higher rating are good for metal works.

Desoldering solution

If it happens that you have made a mistake or error on soldering a certain part on your project then you can use a Desoldering braid. Simply place the Desoldering braid over the area that you wish to clean then heat the copper with your soldering iron which removes the metal flux.

Using a soldering iron is quite hard on my part because my hands are epileptic. It keeps on shivering that the extremely hot tip of the tool once hit my finger holding the piece of electronic component that I intend to solder. I wish that they could invent something like a robotic hand to do the task automatically for me.

      Gessile Mabutsky,

That must have been hurt a lot where your skin made contact with the tip of the hot Soldering tool. Anyway, there are already robotic tools that can perform this particular task and it is being used by manufacturing industries for mass production of electronic items.

The use of this electronic tool does requires some skill. It is highly advised not to use it if you do not have the the skill yet where you should spend some of your time watching the professionals on how they do it. If you are still a student then I’m sure that asking your instructor will greatly help you. Otherwise, there are plenty of videos on YouTube that you can watch for proper actual illustration.

      Monang Ebot,

That’s the best advice for the newbie to seriously take into consideration to avoid any accidents. I have been recently browsing YouTube for videos and there are several of them with commentary instructions from the author on how to do it correctly. After watching those videos, I’m planning to make my own video as well and perhaps posts it here later.
